Need some opinions on which gun to buy hubby for Christmas?

Ok I know the type of gun (Remington 700) I know that he wants a 7mm 08. So my question is what is you preference and why……

Synthetic stock or walnut?
Detatchable mag?

Links to the three I’m looking at:

Does the stock material matter for anything more than cosmetics because that really doesn’t matter to him. I just want to make sure I’m buying him a gun he will get some good use out of.

Thanks :))

Ask him! You can do it discreetly if you find yourselfs at anything with a wooden/synthetic option, and finding what he prefers. I would imagine:
    Walnut
    synth w/ detatch mag
    synth
    Hope this helps!

I would pick the 700 SPS or 700 SPS DM (detachable mag-its about time!). The CDL is a beauty queen but beautiful hunting rifles somehow always manage to get protected more than used (no one want to scratch a beautifully finished coated stock or scratch polished bluing-it’s enough to make you want to end it all). “Tactical-practical” stock and metal finish is so popular and useful for the outdoorsman let alone saving the buyer a lot of money. You really have to find out whether he wants a “blind magazine” (conventional type that requires top-feeding manually into a fixed mechanism or a detachable magazine). Stay away from the overpriced “fashion statement” model. He will be happy no matter what. He must be a real hunter wanting a specific caliber like that.

As a Remington Dealer and a Lifetime Hunter myself, I’ll give you my take on Remington 700’s (The #1 Rifle as far as I’m concerned) I personally own 6..The Stock is cosmetic,BUT a Synthetic stock will take more punishment and hold up better under actual hunting conditions. They are impervious to wet weather, won’t warp, crack, dent or chip Period….Go with the Synthetic stock. As far as the detachable magazine is concerned..Forget that too. Go with a regular 700 SPS with the internal fixed magazine..no detachable magazine to get damaged , lost or dropped in the woods, no spoiled hunting trips because it gets damaged and won’t function. It is un-necessary and just another thing that could cause problems.I sell more Synthetic Stocked Remington 700’s in my stores than wood..about 6-1. Of the two dozen or so Model 700’s I’ve sold in the last year, I only sold 3 with a detachable magazine (Despite trying my best to talk the customer out of the idea) Forget the Model 700 CDL (Too fancy for hunting, not worth the additional cost)Other than these three points I have nothing more to add. You are making an EXCELLENT choice by getting Hubby the Remington 700..7mm08 is an excellent caliber choice too. Good Luck with whatever model you decide on!

    I prefer this one,

But you can’t beat the SPS either.

I’m a traditionalist and love the look of wood but a synthetic stock will hold up better on the long run. If he doesn’t care get him what you like for him. I would love anything my wife gave me, anyway. It is enough that you already know the make, model and caliber rifle he wants.

    Best.

I looked though choices and I would like the SPS Stainless Synthetic or the SPS Buckmaster edition with the camo syn stock. Either would make a great all weather rifle.

I always prefer wood stocks, the walnut looks more classy….it is all just a matter of preference…. I would go with the walnut stock.

Since this is going to be a Christmas present, don’t leave ANYTHING to guesswork!
As Christmas is on Tuesday this year, call around to the local dealers & find who has these model rifles, and plan a Christmas Eve ’surprize’ shopping trip, and let him choose his OWN!
Especially as it will be better that it be sold & registered in HIS name, rather than YOURS, which it will be if you buy it for him in advance, and it is a pain to have the papers changed later!

I would select the synthetic stock for durability and because he said it doesn’t matter to him. I would also go with the tied and true non detachable magazine weapon. That choice will give him a weapon that will function consistently, correctly and with minimum maintenance without having to worry that you scratched the pretty stock.

Your husband is lucky to have a loving wife who puts so much consideration into buying the right gift. Merry Christmas to him!

I realize you want it to be a surprise but take him to get one because it will not be a great present if his preferences are different to yours but i would go for all synthetic its longer lasting and stick with non detachable mag.

I would prefer a walnut stocked rifle in 30-06 caliber, because you have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from.* When you have a 30-06 you don’t need any other rifle.* Give me a wood stock anytime.*
